Professor Paolo De Coppi
MBBS FRCS(Eng) FRCS (Paed Surg)
Consultant Paediatric Surgeon
NHS post: Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust
Paolo is a Consultant Neonatal & Paediatric Surgeon at both Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Portland Hospital. Paolo is the NIHR Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the UCL Institute of Child Health. Concomitantly he is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Wake Forest University, Wiston-Salem, NC, US; Honorary Associate Professor, Division Woman and Child, University Hospitals KU, Leuven, Belgium; and Honorary Assistant Professor Paediatric Surgery, University of Padua, Italy.
Paolo has extensive experience in treating both neonates and older children with complex anomalies and rare diseases. He has a special interest in prenatal counselling and has developed innovative treatments for congenital malformation using innovative keyhole techniques. He performs routinely complex reconstructive upper (oesophagus, gastroesophageal reflux, bowel atresia) and lower (ano-rectal malformation, Hirschsprung’s disease) gastrointestinal surgery.
He has focused his research interests on stem cells and tissue engineering, trying to find new modalities for the treatment of complex congenital anomalies. While working at the Childrens’ Hospital in Boston-US, he had the opportunity of identifying a new source of cells for therapeutic applications showing the possibility of using stem cells from amniotic fluid. This finding generated an international patent, the cover of the January 2007 issue of Nature Biotechnology, and it has opened the development of new ways for the correction of congenital malformations. In 2010 he was part of the team, which performed the first successful transplantation of a tissue-engineered trachea on a child at the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
He has been invited to more than 100 international and national conferences, published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact factor journals such as The Lancet, Nature Biotechnology, Blood and FasebJ; supervised more than 25 research fellow and PhD students and holds various National and International grants. Since 2009 he has joined the Editorial Board of Pediatric Surgery International, Stem Cell Development and Fetal and Maternal Medicine Review; since 2011 he has also become Associate Editor for Stem Cell Translational Medicine
He is a member of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons, the European Paediatric Surgeons Association, and International Society for Stem Cell Research. Paolo is a founding member of The London Children’s Surgery Group at The Portland Hospital.
